1/30/2024 0 Comments Gimpshop malwareThe newer version of GimpShop is already ported to the Windows and MAC OS X platforms. This is just a case of software incompatibility caused by one open source project not keeping pace with its host software. Perhaps the situation with GimpShop is indicative of a larger scenario with forks in the Linux roadway. It does not work with the latest GIMP code base. The only available Linux version was based on an older GIMP version. Then I hit the technical forums to sniff out a tale of similar woes of failed installations. The second was the absence of any documentation within the GIMP application that would indicate that GimpShop was working. The first sign of an anomaly was the absence of a menu entry for GimpShop. But I had the same failure in attempting to install the Debian package on Linux Mint 12 and Ubuntu 11.10. Download to NowhereĪt first I thought I erred in installing GimpShop. But the Debian Linux download only produces the older 2.2.11 version. That version already exists for the Windows and the Mac OS X platforms. The developer’s website refers to a new Version 2.6.11. GimpShop was left behind with version 2.2.11.īut some hope for an updated version of GimpShop may still exist. It seems that the Linux architecture and GIMP itself have moved on. Having a more intuitive interface was the attraction that drew me to the GimpShop promise. But I still have to think out the correct combination of drop-down menu options and right-click access that works to supplement the menus. I learned proficiency in navigating my way through its disjointed three unattached panels. But therein lies the problem - running the hack. Indeed, after running Moschella’s GimpShop hack, Photoshop and GIMP are strikingly similar. Many of the menu options and even whole menus were recreated to faithfully reproduce a Photoshop-like experience. As he explains in his blog, he renamed and reorganized GIMP’s tool sets, options, windows and menus so they closely resemble Adobe Photoshop’s menu structure and naming conventions. But finessing unorthodox characteristics in GIMP is not such a bad idea.Ĭlearly, that was GimpShop creator Scott Moschella’s intent. Settling for second best is not a real problem for typical users. Of course, if you never used Photoshop, you simply struggle to learn the user-unfriendliness of GIMP. But it is sometimes more awkward to use and misses a few of the core features available in Photoshop. GIMP has similar capabilities as Photoshop. It is a clone-like remix of GIMP to make the menus and functionality almost one with the Photoshop experience. GimpShop modifies the GIMP user interface. It is a very close first cousin to Photoshop. It is a free powerhouse that sets the Linux standard for displaying and tweaking all things photographic on a computer screen. GIMP is Linux Speak for GNU Image Manipulation Program. So one of the few Linux options for high-end photo manipulation software is GIMP, which runs on a variety of operating systems. It also is not an available option if you do not already have the very expensive Windows OS as well as the Photoshop software. But that option just presents another layer of workarounds. You can also run Photoshop on a Linux computer running a virtual box containing a Windows operating system. For those with a Windows version of the app, getting Photoshop to run suitably, if at all, under WINE in Linux is frustrating at best. Alas, it is very costly and not available in a free Linux version. Perhaps the gold standard bearer in that category is Photoshop. But few programs tooled for the Linux environment offer the professional-strength options of high-end commercial photo manipulation software. Some of them received favorable reviews in the annals of Linux Picks and Pans - for example, Shotwell, FSpot and GIMP. Linux users have an impressive cache of photo editing tools available. As great as the concept of Free Open Source Software (FOSS) is, not every Linux software package serves the greater good. But my experience this week laid bare a larger issue. I usually set aside badly performing open source products when I test them rather than waste readers’ time with negative reviews. The other driving factor was my desire to produce graphics for a project consuming too much of my time without retreating to that other operating system. One aspect was my weekly quest for software to review for this column. But my disappointment in not finding salvation from resorting to a return to Microsoft Windows caused me to question my decision years ago to convert to Linuxism.Īll of this stemmed from a two-part need. Actually, my faith in the Linux OS is still intact.

1/30/2024 0 Comments Fast people searchIf you find an address via the electoral register or a will but you’re not sure if it’s up-to-date, property websites like .uk will often list whether that property has been sold in recent years. For instance, if I’m having no luck trying to find someone, but I’m able to build a tree backwards and identify that their parent died in recent years and there is a will available for that parent, then the will should contain addresses for the executors who are often close family members like children. It is also always worth searching for wills for deceased individuals in England/Wales via the probate indexes on subscription sites and the probate search website where grants and wills can be ordered for £1.50 each. The English and Welsh civil registration marriage and death indexes are also excellent resources. A top tip is if you can’t find what you’re looking for on one index, try one of the others as there may be omissions or mistranscriptions on one that don’t exist on the others. I frequently use both FreeBMD and subscription site birth indexes to try to identify living people born in England and Wales and then use the maiden name information to attempt to find marriage details for the parents and work back from there. New index entries are being added to FreeBMD all the time for the early 1990s and the indexing project will continue, but those years are not yet complete.įor anything more recent than 1989, I would suggest switching to one of the subscription sites for now. FindMyPast’s index runs up to 2006 and has a free version of the birth index that is currently complete up to 1989. These can often be used to pinpoint someone’s age and when and where they were born in order to build a tree back for them.Īncestry hosts these indexes up to 2007 (again, you need either a UK or world subscription to access them). UK Civil Registration IndexesĮngland and Wales have excellent civil registration birth indexes that include the mother’s maiden name. Also remember that people in the UK have been able to opt out of being included in the public electoral register since 2002 and many do decide to opt out, so there’s a chance the person you’re looking for may not be listed for that reason. It really helps to have a general idea of where in the UK the person lives when searching the electoral register, though, especially if you’re searching for someone with a common surname. Here’s a sample entry (even though it’s public record, we’ve blurred some of the info for this one we chose at random, in case John wouldn’t thank us for sharing it here):ġ92 and FindMyPast also provide information on those who are registered as directors of limited companies and, if you then look these up via Companies House, you will be able to identify a month and year of birth for free. The one resource that is universal, however, is the electoral register, which is taken once a year and is searchable in several places including 192, FindMyPast and Ancestry (a UK or world subscription would be required). Scottish and Northern Irish resources are somewhat different to English and Welsh resources, however, so bear that in mind when undertaking any research. Find People in UK Electoral Registersįor UK-based mystery DNA matches, you can try a few different things depending on the country within the UK in which your mystery match lives. While you can undertake a limited number of free searches on the site each day, you must purchase credits to view the details and credits come in different sized packages most of which are valid for six months. The site is primarily known for providing a search service for public UK electoral registers from 2002 to present but it also offers several other premium services including a people search facility (addresses, phone numbers etc), company director reports and background reports that provide comprehensive profiles of UK-based individuals. The closest resource available would be which launched in 1997 and contains over 750 million UK residential and business records. The UK doesn’t have versions of public “people finder” websites like Been Verified or Spokeo. Don’t stop with the first one! You may have the most success with some further down the list. The default set-up for windows is to have them appear as small pages you can easily shuffle between on a single display, much like macOS. Your main option is the Ready For desktop, which looks a whole lot like Windows 10, down to the "start" button in the bottom left corner with notifications, date and other icons on the right. Once you're plugged in, you'll find yourself with four options to pick from when using Ready For. This allows you to use your mouse and keyboard to navigate, input text into the phone, or move files and data around more easily. You can use two screens in one however by opening the phone within the desktop, either vertically or horizontally. Instead, they behave like two separate devices you can trade windows between on the fly. It's more like having a one-plus-one-screen, since there's no real interaction between the desktop and the g100's home screen. You can also set it as a speakerphone when you receive calls.Bear in mind that despite what Motorola says, this isn't a dual-screen experience in the traditional sense. Dock Mode is different on different phones, but it often turns your phone into a desk clock, photo slideshow viewer, or music player. It may also open a music player app, play music automatically on desk mode if it is programmed as such, open a map/navigation app in car mode, etc. One example is showing a different layout on the docked state. A docking station can make the system and apps do anything that is programmed.

I used to go to the John Lewis restaurant at Brent Cross - The Place To Eat, smoked salmon bagels a speciality - with my mum. On a clear day you can see the flyover at Staples Corner. John Lewis has been a North London landmark since it was the anchor tenant of Britain’s first indoor shopping mall in 1976. Whenever he got lost, my dear old friend the sports writer and FA Cup historian Mike Collett, who grew up in nearby Hendon and has the world’s worst sense of direction, would head for the John Lewis car park to get his bearings and navigate his way home.Īnother Hendon native, the novelist Shirley Conran, was a big fan, too.Īfter ULEZ is extended beyond the North Circular, Brent Cross’s loss is going to be Welwyn’s gain. Let’s hope the Welwyn branch survives that long. Things are pretty grim in the wonderful world of Grace Brothers and beyond. MailOnline has just published a cut-your-wrists gallery of boarded-up shops in London’s Oxford Street, which have all gone under in the past few years. While sitting on my John Lewis stool yesterday, I listened - as is my habit - to the excellent LBC breakfast show presented by Nick Ferrari, talk radio’s equal of Ken Bruce and, I know he won’t be offended, a sort of wireless version of John Lewis.īut instead of diversifying the company’s portfolio, such as building John Lewis-branded flats - which sound a bit like the ‘luxury’ apartments in Rwanda being touted by Home Secretary Sue Ellen Braverman - she should take another look at the core business which has always underpinned its success.Ĭhairman Sharon White (pictured) is considering diluting the company’s staff-owned co-operative model as she attempts to attract investment from outside investors So Sharon White can’t be criticised for trying to inject more money into John Lewis, even if that means watering down the employee partnership deal. The judge however said that assuming the facts of the complaint are true, it's reasonable to "infer that, should plaintiffs’ code be reproduced as output, it will be reproduced in a manner that violates the open-source licenses under which plaintiffs published their code." With regard to the plaintiffs' assertion that Codex and Copilot violate their property rights, the defendant companies argued that the claim should be dismissed because the plaintiffs didn't identify specific code of theirs that had been reproduced. But he found them plausible enough to consider an amended complaint that provides more clarity about the supposed injury arising from Copilot and Codex. Should plaintiffs’ code be reproduced as output, it will be reproduced in a manner that violates the open-source licensesĮssentially, the related claims made by the defendants lack the detail required by law to proceed. Tigar also dismissed – though with leave to amend – the plaintiffs' claims for violating Section 1202(a) of Digital Millennium Copyright Act (false copyright information), contract interference, fraud, false designation of origin, unjust enrichment, unfair competition, breach of the GitHub Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, violation of the California Consumer Privacy Act, and negligence. He did so with prejudice, meaning those charges cannot be amended and refiled. Tigar dismissed the civil conspiracy allegations against the companies, as well as the unidentified plaintiffs' demand for declaratory relief – essentially a judicial declaration of the plaintiffs' rights. The ruling found other aspects of the complaint less compelling. 1/30/2024 0 Comments We happy few simon saysLet's just say I'm more sass than mass." 5 Say a bad word Shutterstock Alexa keeps things clean, and will tell you, "I'd rather not say anything rude."Open app -> tap More on bottom tab bar (far right) -> Settings -> Device Settings -> choose a device that is making the noise -> scroll down and tap on Sounds -> Request Sounds There is a sound for both the start and ending of requests.
